The GeoWalk in outline

The GeoWalk is a circuitous affair with a start and finish in Matlock, the attractive county town of Derbyshire. Accessible by road and rail from major centres such as Manchester, Sheffield, Nottingham and Derby, the only downside to starting in Matlock is that you may be reluctant to leave it.

The map below shows the walk in the context of the local region, which may prove useful for planning purposes, while the geological map below has the route superimposed to show the distribution of rocks along the way. The GeoWalk occupies the greater part of the Peak District National Park and includes the wide variety of scenery that results from this unique arrangement of Carboniferous rocks.

Helpful information

For convenience the GeoWalk has been divided into 14 sections that are, on average, about 15 km long, and can be walked comfortably in a day, with sufficient time to appreciate your surroundings. For those who prefer a more determined approach to their walking, sections can be combined or tackled within a condensed timeframe.

Some sections are mainly linear, so if they are being undertaken as a day walk it is necessary to plan your return to the starting point. Local buses or taxis can often ease this logistical problem, but in the more remote areas some shuttling by car is almost inevitable. Other sections can quite easily be converted into circular routes with a little imagination.
